Georgia has a new program to help you pay your water bill called the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program or LIHWAP.
To qualify you must: Have a total gross income at or below 60% of the State Median Income. Currently, 60% of the State Median income is $24,025 for an individual and $48,125 for a family of four.
You must pay the water bill or prove your household needs help paying for water, and be a US citizen or lawfully admitted immigrant.
You must also get water service from a company that is a registered vendor with the Department of Human Services. Payments will be made directly to the water company.
To apply for help, you must contact the local Community Action Agency responsible for the LIHWAP program in your county. To find out which Community Action Agency covers your area visit http://www.georgiacaa.org.
This program will be open until the funding runs out and is being rolled out in three phases: Through December 31, 2021, only families with past due water bills can apply for assistance. Beginning January 1, 2022 households with a family member 60 years old or older, or with children 5 years old or younger can apply. Beginning February 1, 2022, anyone else who is eligible can apply.
If you have a past due water bill, the program will pay the entire past due amount AND provide either a $200 or $300 benefit toward your current water bill.
If you qualify and do not have a past due bill, you can expect either a $200 or $300 toward your current water bill. You are eligible to get LIWHAP assistance one time each year.
