Filing for Unemployment during the Covid-19 Crisis

Authored By: Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. LSC Funded

If you’ve been laid off or quit your job because of Covid-19, you should apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits.

Right now, you can only apply online at or by calling your local career center.

The work search requirement is waived for all unemployment claims filed after March 15 for up to 120 days.

If your claim is denied, file an appeal and continue to claim your unemployment benefits until your appeal is heard. Appeal hearings for unemployment cases are done by telephone and those will continue as scheduled.

If you’re getting less hours or if your workplace is shut down temporarily, you can also get unemployment. For temporary reductions or shutdowns, employers are required to file an unemployment claim for you.
