Scope of Support: Legal assistance through this program is not available to persons accused of criminal charges, whether felony or misdemeanor.
The State Bar of Georgia Military Legal Assistance Program assists service members and veterans by connecting them to State Bar members who are willing to provide free or reduced-fee legal services.
Service members and veterans often have legal needs in their personal lives and specific to their military service. They also face financial issues and other civil law matters resulting from the sacrifices made in military life.
Support of Veterans: Legal assistance may be provided to a veteran separated from the service with a service-connected disability who is seeking legal services directly related to such disability. As resources allow, a veteran may also be provided legal assistance pertaining to other areas of the law such as veterans benefits.
Support of Active Duty Personnel: Legal assistance may be provided to personnel on active duty concerning a variety of pre- and post-deployment legal matters, excluding criminal law matters.
Support for Spouses of Service Members: Representation may be provided to the non-service member spouse of an active-duty service member where (1) the legal issue affects the well-being of the family as a whole, (2) the interests of the spouse and the service member are aligned, and (3) in either case, the service member would have personally sought assistance had he/she been available or had legal standing to do so.
Support of Other Personnel: To the extent resources allow, legal assistance may also be provided to other categories of individuals with a record of military service (i.e. military retirees, National Guard and Reserve members with legal issues unrelated to their deployment, etc.).
For all other former or current military personnel referred under this program, the lawyer may provide legal services on a reduced fee basis as the lawyer and the client may agree. It is envisioned that the service-providing lawyer will take into account the veteran's or service member's service to our country, his or her financial capacity to pay, and the lawyer may offer an appropriate "military" rate for professional services.
Clients of lawyers referred under this program shall be personally responsible for the payment of court fees and costs; such fees and costs may not be advanced or paid by service-providing lawyers.
